Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate students’ evaluations of sanctions used by elementary school teachers for improving responsibility. Twelve elementary schools in Adana province has been selected in this research. “Punishment Applications in Improving Responsibility Survey” was applied to 412 students (184 girls, 228 boys) attending 5th grades and interviews were carried out with 48 students in this group. The data obtained through both instruments were analyzed by qualitative and qualitative analysis methods. According to the study results, teachers have been using punishment in addition to sanctions having no punishment for improving responsibility. Also, they mostly prefer verbal punishment. Students stated that they changed their behavior in a permanent manner. On the other hand, students made their choices for teachers who did not use punishment.
