Abstract
In this article, the basic characteristics of qualitative research methods are discussed in relation to quantitative research methods and their potential contribution to educational research. In addition, the article reviews the roots of qualitative research, the basic data collection methods used and how the results are used in practice. As the basic characteristics of qualitative research, being sensitive to natural context, the participant role of the researcher, a holistic approach, exploration of perceptions, flexibility in research design and inductive analysis are presented and the possible contribution of research studies bearing these characteristics to the field of education is discussed.
